Established in 1975,

ISOM has contributed to the development of Oriental medicine to medicine of all mankind used worldwide beyond the indigenous or national medicine limited within the territorial boundary by means of research, exchange and innovation of Oriental medicine.
Coupled with culture, science and experiences of each country, Oriental medicine has developed through a long period of time.
But it was confronted by defiant attitude of people who considered it to be "premodern" or "unscientific" medicine compared with western medicine and hence denounced during the transition period to the modern society.
After suffering throm the harmful effects caused by industrialization, nowdays people have returned to Oriental medicine, wisdom handed down from forefathers and finally recognized the benefie of Oriental medicine.
The chief backdrop Oriental medicine has got attractions from the public is that Oriental medicine enhanced its capacity and value as therapeutic medicine by underpinning objective evidences, theoretical and clinical, by means of integrating the existing systems into scientific approach and treating methods while holding on to the human-centered philosophy.

Our Society has played distinguished role for the promotion and international distribution of Oriental medicine by encouraging many experts, scholars, practitioners and those interested to make research and represent their academic achievements at the International Congress of Oriental Medicine(ICOM)s which have been held 20 times since 1976, the 1st congress. And more than 4300 excellent papers and posters have been represented since 1976, the 1st congress.
The Society weighed the anchor for the valuable journey for health of mankind around 48 years ago and many honorable scholars and medical practitioners of the world have joined us.
From the second generation on, the Society will make every efforts in cooperation together with its members, executive countries, WHO and etc, reorganizing the system and coming closer to the humankind so that all the people can enjoy a healthy life and experience the depth of Oriental medicine.
